NEW PRACTICE IN THE BLOCK & BALL GALLERIES

RHINO

Pressing your crown fontanelle against a ball or block, may feel a little unconventional, but it is actually a very useful way to organise the sequential compartments of the body; torso & pelvis, as well as gently strengthen the neck, which shouldn’t be undermined. It provides great indirect reference points for the scapulae & entire shoulder girdle. Using the ball or block, we encourage opposing actions in the body, helping you to gather information & organise your body in space. A great teaching tool, as well as an interesting exploration for your own personal practice.

I encourage you to explore this practice with the ball and the block. Each will have a slightly unique feeling and offer something different to your movement enquiry. If you are apprehensive about pressing with your fontanelle, begin the practice with the soft ball. Remember, that your intention is to create an opposing force, to establish elongation, not compression. Find the right pressure to hold your prop in place, without too much pressure. Bearing in mind, that feeling your neck working and strengthening your neck is not a bad thing. In fact, it’s very useful for your head, shoulder, neck organisation and very important for certain aspects of your movement practice.

This is an exploratory practice (as they all are!). About 3 months ago I taught some of this material in a workshop and a teacher of 20+ years experience, told me that she had never used the prop in this way and that it was great feedback for her body. Our capacity to explore and learn is vast! Thank you for your open-mindedness and willingness to explore with me.

I would love to hear what interesting takeaways you received from this practice.
